buffalo

Devadasa, and his wife met a Siddha. After offering their  respects, they inquired from him about his travels. The siddha replied, "I live at Kalpagrama. I am now coming from Indraprastha. There, I saw the great Siddha named Kapila, and 1 learned Sankhya  philosophy from him.""Once, my preceptor went to Badari, to bathe in the River Yamuna. At that time, a wild buffalo that was oppressed by thirst also entered the water. After drinking, the buffalo  remembered his past life. He quickly came out of the river and offered obeisances to my guru, Kapila. I was also present there."The buffalo said, "O best of the Siddhas, what is the name of this  wonderful holy place? Just by the touch of the water, I gained recollec¬tion of my past existence!"Kapila laughed and said, "O buffalo, who were you in your last life? What did you do that made you  become a disgusting animal?"The buffalo said, "Formerly, I was the king of Kalinga. Deluded by passion, I made no distinction between my wife and the wives of others. I fearlessly wandered throughout  the city at night and would enter a house where 1 saw a beautiful woman. Enjoying with her as I liked, I would take the wealth from that house and then return home." "In my assembly, I would make  young men fight. I would then kill the one who was defeated, after taking away all his wealth. Upon witnessing my sinful behavior, many of the citizens left the kingdom, taking up residence elsewhere."

"One day, Durvasa Muni came there. All the citizens assembled and approached him, complaining about my behavior. They said, "Res¬cue us from the misery caused by our king transgressing his limits.  He steals all our wealth and has spoiled many chaste ladies. He has also killed many children.""Durvasa made up his mind that I must be punished. Naked and dirty, he entered my royal assembly. I  ordered the guards, 'Stop this one, who is like a buffalo, smeared over with dust!' Then, just by uttering the syllable 'hum' Durvasa Muni reduced the guards to ashes. Seeing this, I got up to leave. The  Muni cursed me, saying, 'Sinful man. Now become a buffalo in the forest.' "

"I gave up my life and took birth as a buffalo. Now, due to the pious acts that I had previously performed, I hve come to this place. Merely by the touch of the water, I have remembered my past life.  Tell me, great sage, how I can become freed from this miserable existence." Kapila said, "This holy place is called Badari. Bathe here and you will become freed from the Muni's curse."
The buffalo entered the water. After bathing, when he came out of the river, Indra arrived from heaven. The king of heaven said, "Give up your buffalo body and receive a divine form, fit for residence  in heaven. After ascending Airavata, the former king of Kalinga praised Kapila before going to Indraloka. The Siddha told Devadasa, "While accompanying my preceptor, I saw this wonder at  Badarikashrama. In all the three worlds, there is no superior holy place. If you desire your highest welfare, go there, along with your wife."
